Primary Responsibilities of Commercial Buyer

  • Source scrap metal materials and negotiate material specifications and payment terms.
  • Achieve or surpass volume and margin targets as specified.
  • Support Commercial Managers in meeting supplier requirements at the facility, including quality inspections and payment coordination.
  • Collaborate with operational teams to assess and ensure the quality and grading of scrap delivered.
  • Exercise independent judgment in approving material downgrades.
  • Maintain proficiency in operating both ferrous and non-ferrous scales as needed.
  • Handle incoming commercial inquiries promptly, ensuring responses to quote requests within 30 minutes or as soon as feasible.
  • Maintain accurate content on facility scoreboards.
  • Monitor and analyze industry trends to stay informed of developments.
  • Assess regional market impacts on global scrap metal markets.
  • Stay abreast of federal, state, and local regulations governing scrap metal recycling, ensuring facility compliance
  • Research and compile data on local raw material markets, including pricing trends and supply availability, for informed decision-making.


Primary Qualifications of Commercial Buyer


  • Preferably a college degree in business or marketing, or equivalent business experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in generating new business as a scrap metal buyer or in a sales role within the industrial sector.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment.
  • Exceptional time-management abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective cold-calling and follow-up capabilities.
  • Superior negotiation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Positive credit history.
